Ethel and Norman Thayer are returning to their summer home on Golden Pond for the 48th year. They are visited by their divorced, middle-aged daughter and her dentist fiancée who go off for Europe and leave his teenage son behind with Ethel and Norman for the summer. Billy and Norman bond over fishing and books and learn unexpected life lessons from each other. At the summer’s end, when the visitors have left, Norman suffers a mild heart attack. Norman and Ethel realize now that time is against them, but perhaps another year on Golden Pond may be waiting.
